Vodafone, Bharti, Reliance Top India 3G Spectrum Auction

Vodafone Essar, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications landed key portions of India's 3G spectrum auction after bidding closed yesterday. No single carrier landed spectrum that would cover the entire country.
Vodafone will pay 116.2 billion rupees, or $2.5 billion, for its spectrum holdings. Bharti Airtel will pay 123 billion rupees, or $2.65 billion, and Reliance will pay 85.9 billion rupees, or $1.85 billion.
Each of the companies landed spectrum licenses in the key markets of Mumbai and Delhi. The government auctioned off four spectrum licenses comprised of 22 different circles, which combined cover the entire country. Three of the licenses went to the private sector while the fourth will be used by government-run telecommunication companies.
The Indian government earlier planned to begin the auction for its 4G BWA spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band after the close of the 3G auction.
